When your Mac is asleep, it uses much less energy than when it's awake, and waking a Mac from sleep is much faster than turning it on and waiting for it to start up.

Dec 04, 2019  After electing to put background processes 'To sleep' with Avast Cleanup to improve performance, (Adobe Reader and Adobe Photoshop Elements 12) the programs could not be opened until I uninstalled the Avast Cleanup program. My understanding was that the programs would start on demand when needed. The environment is Visual COBOL 2017 and the objective is to put a program into sleep mode for one minute. Looking in the COBOL manual there is a System Routine of CBL GC NANOSLEEP that will do the job but the call to this routine fails (not found). It’s important to note here that the computer automatically goes to sleep in case you close the lid of your laptop or you leave your computer idle but there’s no option to voluntarily put the computer to sleep. There’s no “Sleep”button in the power menu but fret not, here’s how you can enable the Sleep. Find out what program is interrupting Windows Sleep mode. When you just want your computer to go to sleep and stay asleep, this is how you can make sure that happens.

Put your Mac to sleep

  • Choose Sleep from the Apple menu .
  • On a notebook computer, close the lid.
  • Use a sleep keyboard shorcut.

Wake your Mac from sleep

  • Press a key, or click your mouse or trackpad.
  • On a notebook computer, open the lid.
  • Briefly press the power button.

Change Energy Saver settings

After several hours of sleep, your Mac can save more energy by saving its state to the startup disk, then turning off power to some components, such as RAM. This extends the length of time that Mac notebook computers can stay asleep while on battery power.

It also helps prevent you from losing work if your Mac loses power while asleep, such as after the battery runs low. In that case, plug your Mac into AC power, then press the power button. You might see a progress bar onscreen as the previously stored contents of memory are copied from the startup disk:

All laptops have a special low-power mode, called Stand By mode or Sleep mode. In this mode, the computer is still on but power to certain areas is shut off. That way, you can keep the laptop ready for an extended period without wasting a lot of battery juice.

Your laptop can slumber in Sleep mode for quite some time, much longer than it would otherwise stay alive when it’s turned on. The amount of time the laptop stays in Sleep mode depends on various power settings in Windows. You can direct Windows to sleep for maybe 30 minutes and then have the laptop automatically turn itself off or switch into Hibernation mode.
